Ezekiel had seen the glory of the Lord abandoning Jerusalem and the Temple to their fate (chs 10—11). Fittingly, it is he who describes, in the strange visions of chapters 43—44, the return of that glory. Picking up where Isaiah 40 left off, he points forward to the transcendent and luminous splendour of God’s presence in the wondrously restored Temple. In the last line of his book, the name of the new city is Yahweh shammah, The Lord is There. Jerusalem’s peculiar vocation was to be the place where the God of all the earth would be revealed, lighting up the Temple, the city and ultimately the whole world with his radiant presence...
