Reflection: Naming a child

The naming of a child is a very serious business, though some take it very lightly.
Pity the child named after all the players in his father’s favourite football team; or the girl who finds her first name making some ludicrous combination with the surname of the man she wants to marry.
Names can date children: boys named Elvis and girls named Kylie are usually of a certain generation, as are previous swathes of Harold, Albert, Lilian and Kathleen. As for the more unusual names: they can be chosen, or invented, by parents who have little thought of what the future may hold for a daughter named after an Old Testament prophet (male), or a son named after a racing car.
