Bible reflection: Small is beautiful!

Luke 19: 1-10

You may have noticed that I’m quite small really. Vertically challenged is how they phrase it today! That’s why I’m looking down at you, but I actually feel as if I’m peering over the top of things in order to see you. In some places I have to stand as tall and straight as I possibly can – and even then it’s not enough. Shoes with big heels can only compensate for so much – and they’re very uncomfortable if you have to stand around in them for a long time.

The one thing you can guarantee is that I’m not very noticeable in a busy place. People brush past me most of the time, as if I’m not there and, if a really tall person crosses my path, they don’t always see me until they’ve tripped up over me – and then they act as if I was a paving stone just waiting to catch them unawares, or something nasty they’d picked up on their shoe! In some places I feel as if I’m almost invisible!

So, if I want to see anything, anywhere, I have to get to the front. You all know what it’s like to find yourself behind someone much taller, when you’re trying to look at something? Well, I’m like that all the time! So I either need to get on to the front row, or at the side where I can peer around people, or, failing that, I need to be right at the back where I can stand up, or climb on to something else, so that I can see over other people’s heads.

Being in a crowd is awful. Because I’m so small, people tend to crush me and push me around and, as I can’t see where I am, I don’t know which way to push to get out – and it’s very claustrophobic in there!
