ONE DAY AT A TIME
Meditations for Carers
27. Stormy weather
Matthew 8.26
It is easy to get lost in the midst of the overwhelming, all-consuming task of caring for someone. The 36-hour day saps all our energy and we hardly recognize that exhausted face we catch a glimpse of in the mirror. Did you have time to comb your hair this morning before the first upset that needed your hundred per cent concentration? And was that really you patiently, quietly dealing with it? Later in the day, was that you too who then lost it completely over another upset?
In any one day, we can experience the full range of emotional highs and lows. It can be like struggling to cope in a small boat without oars on a stormy sea! One of my favourite hymns has a chorus that begins, ‘We have an anchor’. I think we all need that anchor safely and securely fastened to Jesus, who is that Rock who will not move during the stormy weather of this stage in our lives and the illness or disability of our loved ones. All we have to do is reach out – he waits, patiently, for our call...
