34. Thorns and thistles

Ezekiel 2.6b

Life seems to sprout thorns and thistles when you’re responsible for caring for someone else, especially if it wasn’t originally your role to deal with money matters and the like. If you now have to fill in the forms on behalf of your loved one, look after the finances, see the bills are paid, make decisions, it can feel like you’re struggling through a tangled jungle where there are penalty-laden pitfalls for the innocent but unwary. I hit it with getting the Enduring Power of Attorney registered. I think we’re nearly there but it took several weeks of worry, hassle and heartache – all pretty much unnecessary if we’d only managed better communication. It didn’t help that various family members’ legal advisers had different opinions and ideas.
