ONE DAY AT A TIME
Meditations for Carers

35. Time off

TMatthew 14.22–23, GNB

I’m starting the week refreshed. I’m feeling much calmer and more able to cope because I took the whole of yesterday ‘off ’ – just like people who have salaried jobs and get a day off! It was wonderful. Outside it poured with rain and I didn’t mind at all. I sat indoors and read and rested. I cooked easy, delicious meals. And now I feel so much better.

And today maybe it’s because I’m calm and relaxed that my loved one is also calm and relaxed. He even went voluntarily for a little nap in the afternoon.

It’s easy to feel guilty about wanting time off, about needing some time for yourself. It’s also easy to become overtired, burnt out and resentful. But it’s not necessary. As the passage from Matthew shows, Jesus himself models a healthy pattern of taking time out when it is needed...
