I’ve got to explain. I’ve got to make you understand. It’s not what it looks like.

We had all hoped so much – too much, probably – but we really thought that Jesus might be the one who could set our people free, break the bondage from Rome, renew our people’s confidence, help us see again that we are God’s people – chosen – that we could again become a mighty nation.

And to begin with it was all so good. I really believed that Jesus might just be God’s Messiah. He spoke with authority. He knew the Scriptures. He was the first person I had ever met who hungered for the kingdom of God like I do. Not like the religious leaders, with their diplomacy, their tact – their compromise. They are gutless bureaucrats; they hold us back. But Jesus was different, and it seemed that he would take them on, take us forward...
