The room was large and comfortable;
the women had carried in the food and the wine
and set the table.
We were looking forward to being together,
just us and Jesus.
So often we were guests at the home of –
Well you name it:
Pharisees, tax collectors, fishermen, strangers, friends.
Jesus was in demand and never refused an invitation,
no matter whether it sprang from curiosity or from kindness.
So privacy was a rare luxury,
as was comfort.
And as we settled ourselves round the table,
he said that he too had looked forward to this meal
with longing.
Everything was perfect.
