Proverbs 1: 20-33 Psalm 19 James 3: 1-12  Mark 8: 27-38


They are some of the angriest words spoken by Jesus, and directed at a greatly loved and well-intentioned disciple; “Get behind me, Satan” (Mark 8 v 33)– almost the same words he addressed to the real tempter, Satan the Devil, in the wilderness (Matthew 4 v 10).  The problem was that Peter used to speak without thinking; on this and several other occasions recorded he uttered words without engaging his brain first.  “Careless talk costs lives”, people were warned during the 2nd World War. Peter’s careless words could have deflected Jesus from his ultimate purpose and cost all of us our lives. Jesus’ response, then, is entirely justified...
