Luke tells us twice about the Ascension, when Jesus returned to heaven to be with the Father. In his gospel, the Ascension account rounds off the entire story of Jesus’ earthly life and ministry (Luke 24:44-53). Before leaving them, Jesus opened the disciples’ minds so that they could understand the Scriptures” (24:45) just as he had earlier “opened the Scriptures” to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (24:32). He showed them how all that had happened was in fulfilment of Scripture, which also foretold that “repentance and forgiveness of sins” would be preached in Jesus’ name, to “all nations” (24:46-47); this would be the work of his followers. There is just a hint of “what the Father has promised” and “the power from on high”, signifying the coming Spirit to enable them (24:49)...
