There are many things that bind our family together. Eating together is one thing and our shared
love of Newcastle United is another. Our commitment to the Lord Jesus and participation in our
local church is of central importance, but we have another strange ritual. That is, each weekday
evening, we explore questions about what it means to be human. This does not happen around the
dinner table, but it does happen around The Simpsons.
We love The Simpsons. Sharp, irreverent and insightful, it appeals to both my wife and I and our
children. Its appeal has long been discussed, from the columns of TV reviews to academic theses,
but I like it because of its reality – maybe a risky thing to say about yellow cartoon characters
with three fingers who have worn the same clothes for the past decade.
