What is it about soaps that is so addictive?  It could be those tense moments of drama when out,
of the shadows, Phil and Grant Mitchell emerge with a grunt of ‘Hello Mum’ to save Peggy.  In
fact, soaps have to exist on such storylines that build to a climax every 30 minutes.  This
‘exaggerated realism’ of Eastenders means that there have been so many murders, divorces,
weddings, fights and addictions that one wonders why the Queen Vic has not been turned into a
community medical and police centre.

Is it the fun of characters that we recognize in ourselves or in others?  Fred Elliott, Deidre Barlow
and the Battersbys of Coronation Street may be extreme characters, but they combine fun with
those aspects of human nature that fascinate and entertain us.  Maybe it is the serious issues they
raise, from teenage pregnancy to Alzheimer’s, so vividly portrayed in the end of the life of Mike
Baldwin.

Perhaps the real reason for my finding soaps so fascinating is that I can watch the joys and tears of
other people’s lives without having them living next to me.  I want to see what happens to the
Slaters, but it would be a nightmare to have them as my neighbours!
