These days all sorts of machines come with their own inbuilt self-test system. My computer printer will run a self-test automatically if there has been some malfunction or error. Some modern cars have components that will check, all by themselves, to make sure that things are functioning properly. We all want things to work efficiently, but manufacturers know that if they leave things to us, to check and test the machines, we may forget, or do it wrong. Better to build the self-test capability into the machine itself...
