In the part of England where I grew up there were two main football clubs to support: Newcastle and Sunderland. Loyalty was, and remains, fierce: woe betide you if you found yourself wearing a black-and-white scarf (Newcastle) in the midst of a group of red-and-white supporters (Sunderland). I lived closer to Newcastle; I supported them, and still do.

But when I grew up and moved away from the area, I found that my loyalty to the entire region, over against the rest of the country, meant that I wanted both teams to do well. If Sunderland were playing against Manchester or Chelsea or Aston Villa, I wanted Sunderland to win. Only if I was forced to choose between Sunderland or Newcastle – when the teams actually played against each other, for instance – would I choose Newcastle, not out of a desire to see Sunderland do badly but because I supported Newcastle even more strongly than I supported Sunderland...
