I was telephoned this morning by a colleague who was writing a piece about George Frideric Handel’s masterpiece, Messiah. We agreed that it has a unique place in the affection not only of Christians, and of serious music-lovers, but of a far wider public. Among the many remarkable things about the work is the fact that the early performances raised money for charity, and that ever since then vast sums have been raised through performances great and small, professional and amateur. Somehow, wherever in the world this music is played, the message has gone home that people in need can be helped, indeed saved, by the story of Jesus...
