John 5.39-47

You can see it in a class at school. You can see it in a sports team. You can see it in an army barracks. You can see it, in fact, almost anywhere where a peer group builds up and gathers momentum despite the best efforts of those in charge.

The boys who sit at the back of the class are more interested in showing off to those around than in doing what the teacher wants. The players who are out to boost their own image on the sports field attempt flashy moves which look good at the time but don’t score goals. The soldiers with an eye on their colleagues, rather than on their commanding officer, are full of apparent bravado and heroism, but when they face the enemy they don’t know what to do...
