The square was crowded. Indeed, it was more than crowded: it was packed to overflowing. People were leaning from windows in the beautifully sculpted office blocks around the square. It was lunchtime, but nobody was thinking of eating. There must have been at least a hundred thousand people in all, and they were all singing.

I remember it vividly. It was the first time I’d ever been in such a crowd. It was in Nathan Philips Square in the heart of Toronto, and it was 5 April 1968 – the day after Martin Luther King had been assassinated. As far as I remember, the demonstration wasn’t organized; it just happened. And everyone was singing ‘We Shall Overcome’...
