John 19.1-7

If you go into the Ashmolean museum in Oxford, you will see many treasures and beautiful objects from countries far away and centuries long past. But the last time I went in I was particularly struck by one set of objects. They weren’t particularly beautiful or unique. But they told a story I hadn’t seen in that way before.

These objects are statues. The main hall of the museum is lined with them. They are statues of Roman emperors and their families. Nothing unusual in that. They are, of course, interesting to the ancient historian, but most people looking at them would simply think, ‘So: that’s what Tiberius (or Gaius, or whoever) looked like.’...
