The dancers swept on to the stage in perfect formation. It was breathtaking. Even I, who know almost nothing about ballet, found the whole performance enthralling. And part of the beauty of a well-performed ballet is the way in which the individual and the group work perfectly together. Every individual must dance his or her particular part exactly right in order that the whole ensemble can stay in exactly the right line, without a single toe or heel out of place. It takes years of training to dance like that, of course, and hours of practice for each particular sequence. But the effect is worth the work...
