You might be surprised to know that, in some parts of England, ‘The Wars of the Roses’ still live on. These wars were fought between the Houses of York (the white rose) and Lancaster (the red rose) in the fifteenth century. But, ever since, the great divide between Yorkshire, on the east side of northern England, and Lancashire, on the west, has continued in the minds of those born and bred in those counties. And, whenever Yorkshire meets Lancashire on the cricket field, the game is known as ‘the Roses Match’, and old loyalties are stirred once again...
