1Timothy 4.1-5
Jane grew up in a family which was always playing games. Outdoor games, whenever possible; but if the weather was bad, and especially on long winter evenings, the children would curl up around the fire and play – well, you name it: Scrabble, Monopoly, Cluedo of course, and lots of other board games. But best of all they liked the old-fashioned card games. They liked the feel of the cards; the excitement of having them dealt out and looking eagerly to see whether they’d got a good hand or not. They got to know the different faces of the Jack, Queen and King of each suit, and the most special cards of all, the Aces. They even had nicknames for them. In later years they would look back and realize that what they might have missed out on, in those days before television, they had more than made up for in terms of exercising their memories, their ability to think strategically, and, equally important, their readiness to play the hand they’d been dealt and not grumble because someone else had a better one...
