I have a friend who is as off the wall as Phoebe in Friends. She once went to see the movie
Titanic and, when I asked her what she thought of it, she replied, ‘I was so disappointed, I
expected a happy ending!’
I love stories with happy endings. I want Dot Cotton to live happily ever after in Eastenders, for
James Bond to get out of the situation of certain death, confound the crazy and somewhat
overacted villain and his country, yet again. Yet, if I am honest, I know that these created works
are deficient. They do not do justice to the reality of life, where my friends are not healed of
cancer and politically complex situations are not resolved simply.
Nor do they do justice to the significance of death. Some of the most moving moments in movies
are to be found in the sacrifice of one human being for others.
