Trinny and Susannah advise me to layer my clothes. Daytime chat shows can revolutionize my
life with a two-hour makeover of hair, fashion and make-up – although, in my case, I am sure it
would take two days. More difficult is knowing what to eat. For example, to eat or not to eat
carbohydrates, that seems to be the question. For those of us at the mercy of the fat police, it is
difficult to find a consistent answer. There are some Jack Sprats who say eat no fat, while other
high-profile experts extol the virtue of great English fry-ups, and the Atkins diet has been
followed by three million of us. Of course, that’s before we even get close to mentioning
different types of sugar, the South Beach diet and so on and so on.
Of course, for some of us, this is a matter of being healthy. For many of us, though, it is a matter
of image. We long for the perfect appearance. One survey concluded that the ‘perfect man’ had
George Clooney’s hair, George Michael’s teeth and Ewan McGregor’s looks. The ‘perfect
woman’ had, among other things, Calista Flockhart’s hair and Imogen Stubbs’ eyebrows. Most of
us do not quite match these physical characteristics. Indeed, in such surveys, the body shapes of
Vanessa Felz or Danny De Vito do not come out on top. So, we try – by means of many things
from the rowing machine to fashion – to improve our image.
