Richard Dawkins has made a name for himself as both an outstanding popularizer of science and
aggressive opponent of religion. For Dawkins, ‘religion is the root of all evil’, acting as a virus
among believers.
With his characteristic humility when he comes to theology, he says, ‘Faith is the great cop-out,
an excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence.’ He is reflecting that old kid’s
definition of faith as ‘believing things we know aren’t true’. It is as if Christians, when entering
church, simply exchange their intellect for a hymn book.
Of course, Dawkins is right, but only for a small section of those who would call themselves
Christian. The majority of Christians have a much more developed view of faith. After all, it is
something that is at the centre of their lives and has been tested by costly decisions and difficult
circumstances. I know a young couple, both with Ph.D.s, whose faith has led them to work as
missionaries in China. I also know a leading lawyer whose faith has been tested by the death of a
child.
These people do not take evidence lightly, nor do they live a schizophrenic existence between
their professional and church lives.
