The writer of Isaiah 40 takes great pains to remind the people of Israel of the full majesty of God the Creator. In wonderful poetry he writes of God ‘who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in’. This same God who created them is far more powerful and longer lasting than the rulers of the earth. Those who are oppressing the people of Israel are nothing to God – they will wither and like dry grass will be carried off when the wind blows...
