Like many, I enjoy the famous story that lies behind the creation of the great statue of David by the artist Michelangelo (1475 –1564). In the late fifteenth century, the Florentine sculptor Agostino d’Antonio began to carve a huge block of marble, hoping to produce a spectacular work. But everything seemed to go wrong, and after a few attempts he discarded the marble, regarding it as worthless. Badly disfigured, it lay idle for 40 years. Then Michelangelo, feeling sure that he could form a magnificent statue out of the abandoned stone, began work. The final piece is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding artistic achievements of all time. The idea was in Michelangelo’s mind; his genius lay in transferring it to the real world.
