In this chapter we have explored two slightly different – but converging – themes. First, we have identified God relationally. Christians know and love – as they are in turn known and loved by – the same God known and loved by Abraham and Moses. The Letter to the Hebrews takes great pleasure in providing a long list of faithful men and women from this era, reminding us that, when we feel disheartened or discouraged, we can look to this ‘so great a cloud of witnesses’ (Hebrews 12.1) who have made the journey of faith before us and entered into the promises that await us, too. And in fact not only do we share their faith but we also have an amplified, enriched vision of it through the coming of Jesus of Nazareth...
