Evangelism Bulletin 267 – Dealing with Failure
It was one of those days when my heart leapt with joy. I looked at the lectionary to see what reading was set for my Sunday service and it was one of my favourite passages. It was the encounter which Simon Peter and some of the other disciples had with Jesus soon after his resurrection. Simon Peter had urged his friends to join him back in the fishing boat after all the hurly-burly of the trial and subsequent crucifixion of Jesus, their long-time friend and mentor. No doubt the men had been so shaken by the experiences of recent days that they craved for security and stability and, as seasoned fishermen, that’s where they turned only to be disappointed by a completely wasted night of fishing (John 21:1-19).
And then, as daylight started to creep over the horizon, a shadowy figure appears on the lakeside. To the fishermen's surprise, and no doubt irritation, the figure offers them advice on how to fish. Reluctantly they heed the advice and are overwhelmed by the size of their catch. By this time the penny had dropped - it was Jesus, risen from the dead as he had promised.
