A new life together

The wedding and honeymoon were fantastic. But I now had to face the harsh reality of learning to cope on my own during the day, for the first time in thirty-seven years. Occasionally, people would pop in, but for the most part I was by myself, and I was terrified. Ralph, bless him, agonized as he left our home in the morning, and checked that I was all right immediately he arrived at work. He never criticized me when I made a mess of things – sometimes there were more objects on the floor than on the table. And for many of my mishaps we just laughed about them. I worked hard to give him a happy homecoming. The coffee on, the fire lit and his favourite music on the hi-fi, with the evening meal prepared and in the oven..
