Large infrastructure projects involving the upgrading and repair of major highways are eyewateringly expensive. For this reason they require careful planning and project management, and that's before we factor in the inevitable inconvenience which they cause to road users. Such schemes are not to be undertaken lightly. With this in mind no one should read Matthew's account of John the Baptist's simple and austere preaching with anything less than a profound and growing sense of trepidation. What John envisages and calls for is engineering on an epic scale, a project so all-encompassing that massive disruption is unavoidable. Advent lays bare God's project to re-engineer humanity's experience of life.
