Imagining the Lectionary: Sanctified by the truth (Easter 7B)
Reflection accompanying images “Salts mill gallery looking at 8 portraits by David Hockney”
and “Looking at Yosemite montage by David Hockney”
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17)
A family visit to see an exhibition of works by David Hockney in the galleries at Salts Mill, Saltaire proved to be a rewarding choice. His works were very popular and attracted much more than just casual attention and passing glances. The two images give a sense of how enthralling these painted portraits and photographic montages are once one becomes fully present to them. And this begs so many questions: are they mirrors in which we see reflected our own truths, or are they windows through which we see fresh horizons How do we interact with this art Is this encounter static leaving us unchanged or is it dynamic, changing us before we leave.
The pairs of women in my photographs were sharing their impressions as they looked and pondered. One is moved to stretch out her hand and touch the glass, as though through this she can somehow be more fully in touch with and express her reaction to Hockney's fabulous multi-image viewpoint of the Yosemite National Park. In the other the women are seated on a bench behind the white line which demarcates their space from the eight colourful canvases of Hockney's seated subjects. Here faces stare back and the visitors sit by proxy in the space of the artist.
