When I was in high school, from 1945 to 1950, the standard English curriculum established by Ireland’s Board of Education involved a different Shakespearean play for each year. My memory recalls The Merchant of Venice, Richard II, Henry IV, Hamlet, and Macbeth— but I am not totally secure on the order. We had to learn most of the major soliloquies of each year’s play by heart, because questions in the government- set examinations presumed it and usually concluded with something about “quoting freely.”...
