You Can Disguise, but You Can’t Hide
1 Kings 22:24- 2 Kings 1:1


A friend of mine recently became attracted to a woman I also know, and he arranged to have lunch with her last week, taking with him his mental list of questions he felt he needed to ask of a potential wife. Being smitten by her looks and her smartness, he had not been inclined to take any notice of my observation that she was monumentally critical by nature. I don’t mean she would be critical of someone she loved; it is more that she is critical of most other people, and I myself find this wearing. When they met for lunch, however, she was somewhat sick (she had strep throat or something) and didn’t look as attractive as she usually does. This didn’t stop her from being as critical (and as smart) as she usually is, but it did stop my friend from being overcome by her looks and her intelligence, and it enabled him to realize that this wasn’t actually a relationship it would be wise for him to try to develop. It was just the coincidence of her being sick that enabled him to come to this realization, though (wisely) he wasn’t prepared to say that God brought about the strep throat for his benefit. (And for all I know, she found him and his list of questions objectionable and/or was simply not interested in him at all; I have only his side of the story.)...
