Modern people get concerned about the Israelites annihilating the Canaanites. As far as one can tell, it only became an issue in modern times. Although Christians explain their concern by referring to Jesus’ exhortation to love one’s enemies, until a couple of centuries ago Christians didn’t see the Old Testament story as conflicting with that. The New Testament shows no hesitation about the achievements of Joshua and rather sees him as a great guy, and Augustine commented that loving our enemies didn’t mean we had to love God’s enemies. While it might be that we see things more clearly than do the New Testament and Augustine, we should at least consider the possibility that there is something odd about us in our modern culture and that it is not that we are more enlightened...
