Eventually Pharaoh’s ministers of state see the point and surely risk their lives with the boldness of their confrontation of Pharaoh: “Do you not yet acknowledge that Egypt is lost?” (10:7). Can he not see they are like animals caught in a trap? Yet they keep returning to the trap to let it spring shut on them again. “Egypt is lost” is a strong expression: Egypt is dead, destroyed, finished. It’s an exaggeration, but anyone can see that the country is going through a series of calamities that have brought it to its knees. But Pharaoh can’t see it.
