Every Sunday on the way to church we drive past a particular bus shelter with a huge advertising placard, and for some while this placard proclaimed, “You can never have enough money.” I can’t remember what it was advertising (which shows that advertising works, because I remember the placard and am extending its reach by telling you about it, but it also shows that advertising doesn’t work, because I didn’t notice the product the advertisement was selling). I used to think about the statement every time we passed, wondering how many people thought it was true. As I think about it now, I associate it with a scandal that has been hot in the news concerning the monumental size of the bonuses paid to some business executives, amounting to millions of dollars. And I wonder, What can a person do with all that money? When does enough become enough?...
