I was talking to a friend yesterday who has long been interested in researching into her family history, and she told me how she had discovered some time ago that both her parents had been divorced twice before they married each other. A friend of hers had discovered that her own parents had divorced and then remarried each other. That reminded me of another friend who discovered that his father must have been conceived when his grandparents were not yet married. We may well have idealized impressions of our parents and grandparents from the time of their middle age and old age, but it can turn out that their earlier lives were much more complicated or colorful than we realized.
