Psalm 49
We recently buried the second-oldest member of our congregation, who until she faded away quickly at the end had regularly attended church. We drove quite a way to the cemetery, and I wondered why, until I discovered that her husband was buried there. We were going to lay her beside him. Yesterday I was visiting the oldest member of our congregation, who is ninety-six. Until recently she was at church most weeks, but she has been unable to be there because of a sore on her leg. She hopes to be back in a week or two, but she is looking frailer, and I wondered whether I will soon be conducting her funeral. You can live on into your nineties, but eventually death is going to get you. When I got home, I heard about the death of a former fellow pastor, about the same age as I am, who had been in good health the last time I saw him but had suddenly become ill and died. You may not live on into your nineties. Death may get you before then...
