Soon after I came to the United States, I attended an inaugural lecture by a man who (we were told) was a full-time pastor and a half-time professor. I laughed because I assumed it was a joke—how could you be a full-time this and a half-time that? (He also told us that he was writing a book on “rest,” which he subsequently published.) How naive I was about the United States! How many things people here are capable of doing at the same time! How inferior it makes me feel! A young man I know works at two jobs, is our church organist, is engaged in graduate study in engineering, and has a wife and baby to try to give time and attention to. It’s not surprising that it’s hard for us to arrange a time to discuss what hymns we should sing in church over the next month. Another young man I know is a graduate student in theology, works as a waiter in a restaurant (or maybe it’s two restaurants), belongs to an Ignatian study group, has been candidating for Baptist ministry, and is in a dating relationship. It’s not surprising that he sometimes can’t show up for our Bible study group...
