My first mother-in-law used to say that time went faster the older you got, and I used to tell myself that really she was simply afraid of the approach of death. As I have gotten older, I have realized that she was right, and I see that my realization does not merely indicate that I fear the approach of death. There is a reason we have this impression. Today in church we celebrated the birthdays of a thirteen-year-old and of a ninety-two- year-old. When you are thirteen, the previous year is one thirteenth of your life, so it’s a long time as a proportion of your life and of what you have experienced. But when you are ninety-two, the previous year is only one ninety-second of your life, and the length of experience of life that you have can make it seem to have gone very quickly. I have one surviving aunt, and I remember now that at ninety-two she warned me that after you reach eighty, time goes very quickly. Even if time is something objective, our experience of it is subjective...
