One of our students came to see me to ask me to meet with another student whose life seemed to be falling apart and who was talking about suicide. The woman had been married for twenty years; her first husband had been “the love of her life.” Then he became ill and died. She hated being alone, and more quickly than was wise (one can see with hindsight) she got involved with another man, and they married. Her second husband worked freelance in information technology and at the time they married was doing well, but then the recession came and the bottom fell out of his business. To try to jump-start its growth, they took out a second mortgage on the house that had belonged to her and her first husband, but that attempt failed, and they are now in danger of defaulting on the mortgage and losing the house, and of her having to pull out of school...
