The news yesterday reported that a recent poll indicates that people’s distrust of government in the United States is at its highest level ever, and that people have a deep sense of economic anxiety and doubt about the future. The apparent air of surprise that accompanied the report was odd because these phenomena are of course related. They reflect the insight expressed in that phrase “It’s the economy, stupid,” which played a key role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign. It reminds candidates that people are not so interested in foreign policy or in important moral issues. Their concern is their own security. You can hardly blame them...
