In the news last weekend was a story about an unemployed and deep-in-debt hairdresser in his forties who went to a “Money Cometh to You” conference at a church in Vermont to listen to a visiting preacher who promised that the Lord could not only save him and take him to heaven but also give him good health and solve even the worst financial problems—indeed, make him wealthy. The preacher spoke about his own 20,000-squarefoot house and his Falcon 900B airplane for delivering his message. After all, he said, Matthew speaks of seeking the kingdom of God and his righteousness and of how all these things will be added to you. The hairdresser pulled out the sixty dollars with which he came to the service and left with none of it, yet he also left with his guilt and shame gone...
