Gaze on an allotment in high summer. All the fruits and vegetables are ripening together, for the profligacy of nature takes us by surprise every time. Every year we grow more beans than we can hope to use. There’s a bumper crop of gooseberries, and the raspberries go on and on, and now the plums are falling off the tree. Tomatoes are turned into chutney and apples are for pudding every day, even after you’ve taken bags into the office, or left them at the back of the church...
