Mark 2.1-12

Gaze on the man lying on the stretcher. He is beyond taking any action on his own behalf. He is so paralysed and weak that he has lost all control over his choices. Gaze on his stiff and useless limbs. Gaze on the hope deep in his eyes. Perhaps he has been able just to whisper, ‘Take me to Jesus, it’s my last chance.’ Or perhaps his friends have rushed round and told him of the famous new healer, and urged him to give it a try.

Gaze on all who are so weak that they must rely on the prayers of others and the initiatives of their family or friends to act for them. Gaze on the frail elderly who after a lifetime of usefulness must relinquish autonomy and learn humility and dependency...
