Come down, O love divine!
INTRODUCTION
Pentecost is an under-appreciated holiday. It is crucial in the story of the People of God – we’ve had the joy of Easter, the promise of new life, and Pentecost tells us, ‘Now go out into the world and do something about it.’ Pentecost is a challenge. It tells us we can’t just sit around self-indulgently talking about how Jesus has redeemed us, personally – we have to take that Good News and use it to transform our world. The function of this liturgy is to mark that transition, through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is risen, and we have celebrated that for 50 days. Now he has ascended to heaven, but instead of leaving us alone, he has given us his Spirit. That Spirit inspires us to go forth and live out the gospel in the world...
