Emmaus: The eyes of faith

During the last couple of decades or so, a series of fascinating coffee table books called Magic Eye have appeared in the shops. The books contain what, at first sight, look like fairly boring two-dimensional wallpaper patterns, but if you hold the pages close to your eyes and then move them slowly away, or if you concentrate hard on the pictures, looking ‘into’ them, you should soon be able to see a beautiful three-dimensional image that reveals, perhaps, a tiger in a field, a camel in the desert, a cactus in flower or some other stunning scene. It might be difficult to hold the picture in view and you might ‘slip out’ on to the surface. If so, you have to blink and start again…
