There is a chain-reaction in our reading from Romans this week. In Paul’s letter, he tells us to rejoice in our sufferings (Romans 5:3). There are many reasons and purposes for suffering. It may be preventive – as when God needs to warn against some wrong thought or action. Suffering may be corrective when God allows some event to make us think and perhaps change course. However, the suffering to which Romans 5:3-4 refers is the suffering of persecution.
