Today’s lectionary passages begin with the Ten Commandments which enshrined God’s Law for the Israelites (Exodus 20) When God gave his chosen people this Law, it was for their guidance and protection. By keeping it they made themselves a nation apart, separated from the surrounding pagan peoples with their profane practices that included sacrificing their children in fires to their false gods (Deuteronomy 18 v 10). God’s Law fostered morality, honesty, cleanliness and neighbourliness, besides total devotion to Almighty God, and it established an identifiable nation into which, one day, the Messiah would be born...
