We don’t see shepherds much these days, not in our society. I live in an area where sheep are plentiful, but I am not sure that the man I occasionally see mounted on a quad bike and chasing sheep through a gate would be classed as a shepherd. The name conjures up a much more caring role, though we may have in mind someone more like Little Bo Peep, wearing a smock and carrying a decorative crook, than a real life shepherd such as David was before he became King of Israel; he tackled both wolves and bears in order to protect his flock (1st Samuel 17 v 34-37)...
